QUESTION:
Can you give me some advice to better my study skills & study habits?
ANSWER:
Have you noticed that there’s just so much information out there on what works, what doesn’t, etc? Quite often, students will try on study method for a week, get frustrated and then try something different the following week. And, then the week after that, they try something else… It’s pure madness and there is nothing to be gained from approaching your studies like this.
The truth is, there are a lot of methods you can follow that will help you succeed - but do you know which ones work the best? More importantly, do you really have the time to experiment in order to find out?
4 years of school is really only 8 semesters (if you mange to do all your coursework between September - April). That’s not a lof time so it stands to reason that you should have a set of strategies in place BEFORE your first semester if you can help it!
This is quite a huge and open-ended topic so I’m not going to address it with specific strategies because everything is available in my downloadable study skills course, EasyGPAbooster.
That said, see my list below. It’s the essence of the sort of skills you should have. What you need is a set of strategies that are known to work. Then, it is your job to consistently use those strategies and let them work for you (at the exlusion of all the other methods out there).
Here’s the study habits and study skills that you really need to master:
- establishing an easy way to manage your time
- knowing how to choose your courses combinations for the best outcome
- knowing how to categorize your courses (helps with studying effectively for them)
- being an expert at taking the sort of notes in lecture that captures essential info
- being a master at knowing what your professor wants you to know
- learning how to focus your study time only on what’s relevant
- learning what will be on exams
- knowing how to write the sort of papers professors love
Once again, this is a lot of information to cover in one post, which is why I’ve put together a simple, downloadable course. If you are intersted, you can find my study skills and study habits course here.
