The secrets to boosting your GPA and getting good grades in college (4.0 GPA)

How To Study Well In University

ARTICLE SUMMARY

This article will show you how to study well in university so that you can be as efficient as possible and score the best grades possible in all your courses.

As you make your way through university, you are going to be bombarded with so much information in your courses and you will be expected to know everything that is presented to you. As such, knowing how to study well will make all the difference (ehmm, you can leave your high school study skills at the door)!

In university there is no test or exam that can logically cover all the material presented in each of your courses, for the most part, and so your study skills can be tailored with this in mind. The biggest key to studying well is learning how to focus your efforts on what matters the most (or, in essence, on the materials that will most likely appear on tests). The A students already know this and so they allocate the lion’s share of their studying efforts towards this sort of material, first and foremost. And, to tip the scales further into their favor, they employ a sharp study skills system that cuts down how much time they have to spend studying – hence, all the free time they tend to have versus the struggling students!

So, how can you implement these strategies into your daily routine?

The purpose of this article is to give you a simple study system to work with, however presenting a full-fledged system is far beyond the scope of what I can share with you here. If you want an out-of-the-box study system that you can start using today, please download a copy of my book Easy GPA Booster.

The bare-bone’s system I’ll leave you with here will help you sharpen your study skills so that you can have something to help you get started:

1. Do all required readings

Normally, you’ll have a set of readings to do before each lecture in university. For the most part, there will be essential reading materials and then supplementary materials. Read through your text books (essential materials) and understand as much as you can before lecture. You don’t necessarily have to make notes for everything you read, just be sure to make a note of anything you don’t understand.

2. Go to all lectures

Make it a point not to ever miss a single lecture. In university, things move very quickly and your study skills will be put to the test if you miss out on too much! So, don’t miss a single lecture, okay?

In addition to attending all your university lectures, make it a point to keep up with the fast pace. If you do all your readings before hand (which is essential as far as university study skills go), you should be able to keep up during lecture a lot better compared to if you haven’t done the readings. Plus, your questions from the day before (those that you noted during you readings) should be answered during lecture. If they are not answered, put up your hand and ask! So many students are fearful of doing this. Don’t be. Chances are, you are not the only one with the same question.

3. Take comprehensive lecture notes

Again, if you’ve done your readings, you will have no problems keeping up with your lecture notes. There are various college note taking strategies that I get into, in particular in my book Easy-GPABooster, however just know for now that if you’ve familiarized yourself with the lecture material, you will have no problem keeping up. University lectures are normally paced quickly so if you haven’t done your homework, you will more than likely have problems keeping up.

4. Study & Learn

Review your work every day. Aside from preparing for your lectures, this is another one of the essential university study skills you must master. I can’t stress this enough. You must review what has been presented to you.

I will also say that it is not enough to simply memorize your lecture notes. You need to internalize the material and learn it first. Again, this will require a system as well. You can look over the section on college note taking and of course, Easy-GPA Booster goes into all of this. For the purposes of this university study skills system, just plan on learning all your lecture material first and then move onto memorizing it.

5. Manage your time

There is going to be so much that needs to be done in any given day when you are in university so you must have another system in place that helps you mange your time. The top 5% of students get it all done, remember, and they do this by planning out their days and making a conscious effort to use every minute that’s available to them. This is another one of the essential university study skills that you need to master.

6. Get Help

If you don’t understand something, get help immediately. If you can’t reach your professor in person, shoot him or her an email. By addressing your issues right away, you will eliminate the risk of them being forgotten. It is the forgotten issues that tend to haunt a great many students when it comes to exam time!
